Capturing ambient audio at an indigenous village on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua.

Audio. Video. Graphics. Maps. DATA.

Alex Newman is an interactive journalist specializing in data visualization, multimedia and user experience.

She is currently the senior editor for interactives at FiveThirtyEight, based in New York City. (Update: On April 25, during ABC-Disney layoffs, Alex and 20 others at FiveThirtyEight were let go. She’s currently seeking a new opportunity for herself AND also happy to help connect anyone looking for writers, copy editors and other visual journalists affected by the layoffs.)

She most recently worked as a visual editor at the Wall Street Journal. Other former jobs include: PRI’s The World, Al Jazeera America, the Pew Charitable Trusts, Home Front Communications, USA TODAY and the Reno-Gazette Journal. She has also taught journalism whenever time permits.

She’s terrible at using professional headshots, as you can see here.

She grew up in Reno, Nevada (Ne-VAH-DUH, not Nuh-VA-DAH) and shares her apartment with a pet tortoise, Capt. Ahab, and a pandemic rescue cat, (the Earl of) Ham Sandwich.
